The Origins of the Conflict Between Iran and the United States
By Staff Writer

The political conflict between Iran and the United States has deep historical roots linked to major political events of the 20th century. Historians and political analysts note that several key incidents significantly shaped the tense relationship between the two nations.

According to the book All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror, one of the most critical turning points occurred in 1953, when the Iranian government led by Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh was overthrown in a coup widely believed to have been supported by the United States and the United Kingdom. The coup resulted in the restoration of the Shah’s rule in Iran and created long-lasting resentment and mistrust among many Iranians toward the United States.

A deeper analysis of the same event is presented in The Coup: 1953, the CIA, and the Roots of Modern U.S.-Iranian Relations, which explains how the operation involving the Central Intelligence Agency reshaped Iran’s political history. Many scholars consider the 1953 coup to be the foundation of the modern political tensions between Iran and the United States.

The relationship deteriorated further after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, which removed the Shah from power and established a new Islamic government. Shortly after the revolution, another major crisis erupted when Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took American diplomats hostage.

This incident, known as the Iran Hostage Crisis, lasted 444 days and became one of the most serious confrontations between the two countries. The event is discussed in detail in the book Guests of the Ayatollah: The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam.

Overall, political scholars agree that the 1953 coup, the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and the Iran Hostage Crisis played major roles in shaping the long-standing political hostility between Iran and the United States, a tension that continues to influence international relations today.
